OTTAWA, October 4, 2005 - QNX Software Systems today announced that Doug Schaefer has joined the company as a senior software architect and has been appointed as the new project lead for the Eclipse C and C++ development tools (CDT) project. Schaefer will play an important role in leading the team of Eclipse developers working on the development of future generations of the open source CDT project. Schaefer's hiring comes on the heels of the recently announced Eclipse CDT 3.0, the latest version of the popular platform for building C/C++ development tools. Schaefer brings more than 15 years of software development and architecture experience to QNX from IBM Rational and Bell Northern Research (now Nortel). In addition to his role as Eclipse CDT project leader, Schaefer will serve on the team responsible for building the next generation of the QNX® Momentics® development suite, QNX's Eclipse-based tools offering.

Schaefer joins QNX from IBM Rational, where he was the development lead and architect for that company's contribution to the Eclipse CDT project. In addition to his CDT work, Schaefer managed the IBM Rational team responsible for code generation and debugger integrations for the Rose RealTime and XDE UML modeling products. Also, while at Bell Northern Research (now Nortel), he took on numerous responsibilities and wrote the software for the maintenance system of the company's DMS voice communication switch.

"Doug brings a high level of knowledge to QNX, and his expertise and experience in managing IBM Rational's CDT contribution make him a perfect person to ensure that the CDT project continues to be one of Eclipse's most successful programs," said Charles Eagan, vice president of research & development, QNX Software Systems. "Doug is a very skilled software developer who will play a major role in shaping the future of software development tools here at QNX and, through Eclipse, across the industry."

"By taking this position, I have the enviable opportunity to work with some of the best software developers from around the world to plan and develop future generations of the best-of-breed platform for C and C++ development," said Schaefer. "It will be very gratifying to do this work with the community and simultaneously put the Eclipse platform to work for QNX at a time when its products and services are in high demand in many markets, including automotive, networking, and industrial automation."

Schaefer earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in computer sciences from the University of Saskatchewan.
