IPL for 16 bit OS...

Hi...

The Prometheus board (http://www.diamondsystems.com/products/prometheus)
has a 2 MB On board flash where the BIOS resides. The BIOS occupies 1/4
of this space, and I have 1.5 Mb of the on-board flash to put and IPL + ifs.

It seems to me from reading their literature (attached) that this Bios
will treat the rest of the on-board flash as the A: drive. I have
several questions:

1. If the BIOS treats the rest of the on-board flash as a disk, do I
still need an IPL? It seems to me that the answer is no.

2. Provided that I do not need the IPL, then the main trick here would
be that the BIOS treats the OS that resides on the on-board flash as a
16 bit OS. Would the image prefix would take care of this
automatically. Is this correct? It seems to me that I myself have to
put code in the image prefix to do this on my behalf. Is this correct?

3. If I would like to bypass the BIOS, then I would create an IPL that I
would write over the bios. The question is: how would I transfer the
custom IPL + ifs that replaces the BIOS to the on-board flash?

4. If I have to write my own custom IPL, how do I specify that it will
work in a 16 bit environment?

If the BIOS truly treats the free area of flash as a floppy drive, and
has some option like "Boot from BIOS virtual floppy", or something like
that, then you're correct, you shouldn't need an IPL. You just need to
create a floppy boot image and place it in the flash at the correct
location so that the BIOS will see it there.

No, any x86 system that's booting QNX, whether from hard disk, flash,
or floppy, comes up in 16 bit real mode. The startup code begins executing
in this mode, and then switches to 32 bit protected mode at some point
during its execution. If this board is capable of doing what you say,
then a floppy boot image that boots the board from a real floppy drive
should work fine when placed in the flash.
3. If I would like to bypass the BIOS, then I would create an IPL that I
would write over the bios. The question is: how would I transfer the
custom IPL + ifs that replaces the BIOS to the on-board flash?
If the on-board flash is in a socket, then it can simply be removed,
put into an EPROM/flash burner, backed up, and then erased and written
with the new IPL and OS image. However, this can be a tedious process when
developing an IPL, so a ROM emulator, such as the PromICE
(www.grammarengine.com) can be a handy tool.

However, this board appears to have a soldered down flash as its BIOS.
The BIOS itself provides for programming the free area, but to erase the
BIOS and program a non-BIOS IPL, you'd need to boot the board into QNX,
using a hard drive or floppy, and then run a flash filesystem driver
to access the flash part. Then you'd back up, erase, and program the
flash using this driver. But, unless you have some backup mechanism
to restore the BIOS incase you program the part with broken code,
you'd only get one shot at overwriting the BIOS with your IPL.
4. If I have to write my own custom IPL, how do I specify that it will
work in a 16 bit environment?
There is an example of a non-BIOS IPL for an x86 system in the BSP
source code:

The Prometheus board (http://www.diamondsystems.com/products/prometheus)
has a 2 MB On board flash where the BIOS resides. The BIOS occupies 1/4
of this space, and I have 1.5 Mb of the on-board flash to put and IPL + ifs.

has some option like "Boot from BIOS virtual floppy", or something like
that, then you're correct, you shouldn't need an IPL. You just need to
create a floppy boot image and place it in the flash at the correct
location so that the BIOS will see it there.


2. Provided that I do not need the IPL, then the main trick here would
be that the BIOS treats the OS that resides on the on-board flash as a
16 bit OS. Would the image prefix would take care of this
automatically. Is this correct? It seems to me that I myself have to
put code in the image prefix to do this on my behalf. Is this correct?


No, any x86 system that's booting QNX, whether from hard disk, flash,
or floppy, comes up in 16 bit real mode. The startup code begins executing
in this mode, and then switches to 32 bit protected mode at some point
during its execution. If this board is capable of doing what you say,
then a floppy boot image that boots the board from a real floppy drive
should work fine when placed in the flash.


3. If I would like to bypass the BIOS, then I would create an IPL that I
would write over the bios. The question is: how would I transfer the
custom IPL + ifs that replaces the BIOS to the on-board flash?


If the on-board flash is in a socket, then it can simply be removed,
put into an EPROM/flash burner, backed up, and then erased and written
with the new IPL and OS image. However, this can be a tedious process when
developing an IPL, so a ROM emulator, such as the PromICE
(www.grammarengine.com) can be a handy tool.

However, this board appears to have a soldered down flash as its BIOS.
The BIOS itself provides for programming the free area, but to erase the
BIOS and program a non-BIOS IPL, you'd need to boot the board into QNX,
using a hard drive or floppy, and then run a flash filesystem driver
to access the flash part. Then you'd back up, erase, and program the
flash using this driver. But, unless you have some backup mechanism
to restore the BIOS incase you program the part with broken code,
you'd only get one shot at overwriting the BIOS with your IPL.


4. If I have to write my own custom IPL, how do I specify that it will
work in a 16 bit environment?

There is an example of a non-BIOS IPL for an x86 system in the BSP
source code:
