ntp use with windows as the server...

Postby Miguel Simon » Tue Mar 29, 2005 3:20 am

Hi...

I have tried to setup windows to be an ntpd server (requirement), but I
cannot get the whole thing to work. I wonder if anyone has some
pointers on how to set this up as such?

1. ntp server running in a windows box
2. run ntpd in QNX to get time from this win box.

Thanks.

Regards...

Miguel.

Hi...

Part of the answer is here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314054/EN-US/

but I have a dual NIC system, and NTP seems to be unable to cope with
this. Solution is to create your own custom client/server NTP pair. This
will take at least as much time -if not less- as trying to find out what
could be done. Oh well.

Regards...

Miguel.

Hi Miguel,

Can you elaborate?

How do you create your own custom client/server NTP pair?

Do you need to do this if you are using Tardis for the broadcast server?

Is this mentioned in the version 3 docs?

Hi Gordon...

Lamentably, 'custom client/server NTP' here does not mean much. What I
mean is that you can attempt to replicate some of the functionality of
NTP using your own TCP/UDP/other client/server mechanism where you know
the IP address of the server and/or client. In my case, I get the time
from a windows box (connected to outside Ethernet and where the user has
the GUI) using my own protocol, and then use ntp service for the
internal unix (qnx/linux/other) based network. In this manner, everyone
is synchronized to the same world NTP time.

Miguel.
