OT: Email address shown in Forum Messages

Postby jookie » Sun Mar 13, 2005 10:48 pm

When I signed up for this board, like most people, I selected the option "do not show email address". But now I see that my email address is shown in my posts although it is modified to be a little more difficult for spammers to target.

Am I the only one who's concerned about their email getting spammed?

What, your not getting spammed already ??? ;-)

You can make your email address hard to read for robot but I heard some
robot are marking email adress to be further analyse by human and then be
put in some email database. Hence, putting the word spam, I guess, attract
these robot program. Go figure.

Don't use that crap PHP script on OpenQNX, get a real news reader. Mozilla/Thundrbird do a good job.

Oh thanks, I didn't realise this was on the usenet - I thought it was just a web based forum.

Sp@m will inevitably find this email now :(

Only the "QNX Newsgroups" section is accessing Usenet, the rest of OpenQNX is the real website/forum.

This "board" is a USENET newsgroup. There's no way to "hide" your email
address, other than by munging it in your NNTP client.

It's inevitable. I get spam on an email address that I've never used
publicly, or for signing up for anything, and there's no way my mail
forwarding service has given it to anyone. Lots of spammers just send
mail to random words from dictionaries, etc. They also use web spiders
to dig email addresses out of web pages.

The only way to fix this problem is a new email protocol.

I always wonder why instead of having laws against spams, the law was not
targeted at company making use of spam. Maybe there are problem with
implementing such law.

Other solution is ISP would charge x cent per email over 1000 per month.
But then ISP are probably happy to get the money from spammer and don't want
to loose them as customer?

If you use your own reader then a completely false address can be easily entered.

Another detail is that the inn.qnx.com server doesn't share it's groups with the wider Usenet, except for comp.os.qnx of course.

Hi...

I agree with Mario.

There was this news on CNN about IBM's FairUCE service. I wonder how
successful this will be.
